LOHR is an accredited equine sanctuary dedicated to lifelong care for horses while connecting them with the community through education and wellness programming.
This role focuses on the daily health, safety, and comfort of approximately 40+ sanctuary horses, many of whom are retired Thoroughbreds. Direct Horse Care staff work closely with the herd to maintain a calm, safe, and well-managed farm environment.
Primary Responsibilities
• Feeding grain and hay according to individualized feeding plans • Distributing supplements and medications as directed • Cleaning stalls, paddocks, and waterers • Turnout and safe handling of horses for daily routines • Grooming horses and checking for injuries, swelling, or changes in behavior • Monitoring herd dynamics and reporting health concerns promptly • Assisting with blanketing, fly protection, and seasonal care • Supporting veterinary and farrier visits by safely handling horses • Maintaining clean, organized barn and storage areas • Assisting with occasional facility tasks related to horse care
This position requires strong horse handling skills, attention to detail, and a deep respect for horses who may have medical, behavioral, or age-related needs. Many of our horses have transitioned from athletic careers into sanctuary life, and patience and thoughtful horsemanship are essential.
Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and capable of performing physically demanding tasks such as lifting feed bags, mucking stalls, and walking uneven terrain.
Ideal applicants are dependable, observant, and able to work independently while communicating clearly with the farm team.
